Riobamba to Quito to Puerto Lopez

Riobamba is the starting point for the train ride known as the Nariz del Diablo, a single carriage engine, the highlights being able to ride on the roof and making the switch backs on the devils nose.

BaƱos is located under the volcano which is continually on the threat of eruption, we were here to enjoy the hot springs and the general tranquillity of the setting.

That said, our tour of waterfalls turned ended up turning into a bridge jumping adventure. We were tied to one side of a bridge 50m ish high with a rope half that length. Then you jump. We were buzzing for days...

And the waterfalls were nice too...

Had some one to one Spanish lessons to get some past and future tense assistance. And following a heading spinningly hot hot spring dip we decided to treat our back to a massage for the damage our backpacks are doing (somehow mine has bulged from 14k to 22k ?).

Spent a night at Latacunga, eating a plate of deep fried pig consisting of:
cracking the size of my head
some pork
deep fried cheese empanadas (pasties)
deep fried plantain
toasted maize
and pop corn?

In the morning we went to a disappointing local market, honestly, I´ve been to better car boot sales (Peckham, Cold Harbour Lane, comes to mind).

Then we hit Quito, and its alright really, not even the skag heads that shoot up out our window in the mornings are bothering me. When going to buy tickets for the Opera we were disappointed to find that all seats were sold out, but ended up with a whole box to ourselves, nice. Carmen.

Which brings us back to the beach, again, and a spot of whale hunting...

...they were so close it felt as if you reach over and pick off the barnicles.

Loved banos but did not get round to the bridge jump. We did hire dune buggy and get stuck on several hills due to the insufficient torque and soaked through several rivers. We said goodbye to a couple fo aussies that we travelled for a month with. We first met them in Thailand and met up with them for the Glap and some Ecuador adventures. We parted in style in an outdoor 5 star spa with great view of Banos. I convinced them to let us drink our own wine we brought with us and we felt like rock stars (I even had my sunglasses) as we swanned from pool to pool. xxx
